When the United Way Retirees Association first launched, they committed to “enriching the lives of retired United Way professionals by helping them stay connected and using their skills and talents to help UWs serve their communities.” Now 35 years later, United Way NEXT continues this mission by leveraging the skills and expertise of our volunteers. With an expanded membership base, UW professionals, alumni, and retirees diligently serve as board members, work group chairs, faculty members, mentors, guest speakers, and more!
35 Years of United Way NEXT: How Sponsored Memberships Strengthen Our Alumni and Professional Network
This year, United Way NEXT celebrates 35 years of connecting leaders, fostering community, and embracing the spirit of United Way! To mark this milestone, 2025 Board Chair Paul DeBassio honored the anniversary by gifting 20 individual memberships at the Leadership Giving Circle level to colleagues and friends who have made his career at United Way meaningful.
Historical Perspectives: 35 Years of Newsletter Headlines Trace Alumni and Retiree Interests
From its beginning 35 years ago, the United Way Retirees Association (UWRA), now United Way NEXT, has used regular newsletters to communicate, learn, and enjoy keeping in touch with the United Way and one another. Far more than information, it describes the evolution of member interests in meeting their own needs and those of United Way colleagues. Just like chapter titles in a good book of history, these headlines, beginning with the first newsletter published 35 years ago, outline the rich history of a movement with nearly 140-year-old roots in the culture of philanthropy.

In honor of our 35th Anniversary, United Way NEXT is excited to feature articles from past issues of the original United Way Retirees Association newsletter!
This month, we’re highlighting an article featured in the Winter 1991 issue titled “UWRA Benefits Study.” According to UWRA’s President, Chuck Devine, “this was a major piece of work” which he credited to Bill Smith & the board.
