INTERIM CEO - POSITION DESCRIPTION
The United Way Retirees Association (UWRA) seeks an experienced nonprofit leader to guide the organization through a transition between two permanent executives. The Interim CEO is a time-limited and contractually defined position, which functions as the chief operating officer on behalf of the Board of Directors.

Headquartered in Alexandria, VA, UWRA is a national membership association that keeps current and former United Way leaders connected to each other and the United Way network. UWRA offers one in-person member gathering in September and 30+ virtual educational and networking events (approx. 15-50 participants) throughout the year. UWRA also provides advisory services to local United Ways by connecting members' talents with needs in local communities.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Interim CEO is a negotiated temporary, contracted employee with the organization. The 30-hour per week position reports to UWRA’s Board Chair. The compensation is $4,000-5,000 per month, depending upon experience. Candidates should be able to make a commitment of three to nine months. UWRA is a remote-friendly work environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
During the contracted term, the Interim CEO will be responsible for the following:
BOARD GOVERNANCE & SEARCH SUPPORT
- Provide counsel to the Board of Directors to facilitate a smooth transition to the interim CEO’s successor. Provide logistical support for the CEO search committee, which will be comprised of key stakeholders from the organization. NOTE: In order to assure UWRA of unbiased and equitable professional support to the search process, it would be a conflict of interest for the interim CEO to consider candidacy for the successor position at any time during the interim engagement.
- Serve as the staff liaison to the Board of Directors. Support the planning, implementation, and follow through for bimonthly Board meetings and four Work Groups, which meet monthly.
FINANCIAL & OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT
- Oversee and manage the organization’s operations and finances in alignment with the Board-approved annual operating budget (approx. $200K). Prepare and distribute monthly financial reports. Review and submit payroll (semi-monthly). Collaborate with the CPA to submit UWRA’s 2021 Form 990.
- Manage two part-time (5-10 hours per week) staff and several independent contractors. Currently, these staff and outside resources provide support to the CEO with bookkeeping, design, editing/writing, marketing, membership processing, and program management.
BRAND STRATEGY
- Support the designated Board lead to finalize UWRA positioning materials and implement UWRA’s rebranding strategy.
RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
- Uphold the positive positioning of the association with key stakeholders. Steward funding relationships with individual, Leadership, and organizational members. Oversee UWRA’s membership retention and growth strategies. Manage Q1 renewal mailings, including the launch of a Leadership giving program for organizational members.
CONTENT & PROGRAMMING
- Oversee UWRA’s content and programming to meet members’ interests and exceed expectations. Develop and edit content and manage the fulfillment for the association’s 12-page quarterly newsletter (April and August 2022)
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of executive-level experience.
- Experience cultivating productive working relationships with a Board of Directors.
- Excellence in operations management, project management, and multi-tasking skills. Must be comfortable with administrative and strategic responsibilities.
- Demonstrated understanding of accounting principles and practices.
- Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
- Excellent public speaking, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to develop and lead geographically disbursed team members.
- Mission-driven, positive, self-directed, and trusted strategic thinker.
Preferred Experience & Qualifications
- Leadership experience with a membership association; Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation a plus.
- Experience with MailChimp, QuickBooks, and Salesforce.
- Prior United Way experience.
