Q&A with Andrew Konkel
What inspired you to enroll in the Interim Executive Academy?
I was first introduced to the Interim Executive Academy by a colleague and, after researching its offerings, I was immediately drawn to the opportunity to connect with and learn from exceptional nonprofit leaders across the country. I'm also inspired by the potential to contribute to the transformative impact interim executives can have on nonprofit organizations, helping them navigate challenges and drive positive change.
What were some of the most valuable takeaways from the program?
One of the most valuable takeaways was understanding how interim work differs from permanent, full-time roles and how it can truly be transformational. I also appreciated learning the science and concepts that can be applied across various situations to drive impactful alignment. Additionally, the opportunity to connect with and learn from nonprofit leaders with diverse experiences and perspectives was incredibly valuable, and I know it will continue to influence my career moving forward.
How do you see your new skills benefiting local United Ways and nonprofit organizations?
My new skills have equipped me to support United Ways and other nonprofits through leadership transitions and organizational challenges. I can help navigate the departure of long-standing leaders, develop sustainable strategic plans, and guide boards in identifying the qualities they need in their next leader. I'm confident in my ability to partner with boards and leadership teams to address a wide range of challenges and opportunities.
As a graduate, what have you gained from attending the United Way National IEA Roundtables?
As a recent graduate, I’ve attended one Roundtable so far and am already excited for my second. The experience was incredibly valuable—I had the chance to connect with inspiring nonprofit leaders, gain fresh perspectives, and learn from their real-world experiences. It broadened my thinking and helped me grow both personally and professionally, all while expanding my network.
What advice would you give to other United Way NEXT members considering the academy?
I’d tell them—definitely sign up! Even if interim work isn’t your goal, the Academy is a fantastic opportunity to build new skills and strengthen your leadership as a nonprofit professional. You’ll expand your network, gain valuable insights from peers across the country, and walk away a more effective leader. It’s truly an incredible experience.
What other UW NEXT benefits are you looking forward to exploring?
I'm currently serving as a mentor to another United Way staff member in resource development, which allows me to stay connected and support the growth of newer professionals. I’m also looking forward to participating in future UW NEXT chats and trainings to continue learning and engaging with the network.
What’s NEXT for you in your leadership journey?
I'm currently exploring several potential leadership opportunities in the nonprofit sector and remain open to where this journey leads. I'm excited to see what new possibilities may come my way!
