UW NEXT Webinar: Democracy's Past and Community's Future in America- Part One
2:00 - 3:15 pm ET United Way’s origins and continuing work are grounded in the concept of democratic community: people who love freedom but also believe in the value of caring for one another. In recent years, the polarization and ideological fracturing of our political system have severely pressured the sense of mutuality that once made American communities so special. In this two-part series, author, historian, and award-winning professor, Brook Manville, UW NEXT Member and Alumni, would like to explore this topic with fellow UW NEXT members and UW alumni to engage with them about future solutions—for healing our communities to help heal our democracy writ large— without delving into partisan politics. In this 75-minute session, Brook will present some of the key ideas of his recent book The Civic Bargain: How Democracy Survives, co-authored with Josiah Ober, which The New Yorker magazine named a “Best Book of 2023.” Given Brook’s broad understanding of history, he will summarize earlier democracies and their subsequent impact on our own, illustrating that bargaining, compromise, and “civic friendship” have long been essential to sustaining democracies. UW NEXT Webinar: Democracy's Past and Community's Future in America- Part Two
2:00 - 3:15 pm ET Join UW NEXT for the final 75-minute session of a Two-Part Series, where Brook Manville, UW NEXT Member and Alumni, will use principles from his book about democratic resilience to moderate a discussion about the role of local communities in rebuilding our nation’s self-governance. We’ll start this second session by examining some ideas from Alexis de Tocqueville—a sort of “patron saint of United Way” but importantly, whose work first connected local communities to the specialness of American democracy. Brook will then open the discussion to audience members—inviting reactions, ideas, and suggestions, based on their United Way experience—about what can be done at the local level of our nation’s communities to rebuild our democracy overall. This session titled Democracy's Past and Community's Future in America will be interactive and welcoming to anyone interested in attending such a discussion. Understanding the main thrust of ideas from Part One (held on April 17th) is a requirement—it will be recorded for review in advance for those who missed it or want a refresher. Brook will also send out some brief pre-reading and ground rules for the discussion of this session. Please join this rare opportunity to learn, share, and connect. Register HERE! |

General Session- The Power of Good Questions
2:00 - 3:00 pm ET Questions are under-utilized. Most adults are unpracticed and unskilled at true inquiry, yet the effective use of questions is one of the powerful, if not the most powerful, mechanisms for unlocking creativity, solving problems, and generating meaningful action. As a Harvard QFT-certified (Question Formulation Technique) teaching supporter of The Right Question Institute, Patrick Jinks, UW NEXT member, UW alumni, and guest speaker, will share some key tenets of inquiry and engage the participants in some eye-opening activities in this session entitled The Power of Good Questions. Expanding on his TEDx Talk on the Power of the Question, Patrick will demonstrate how questions unlock thinking during an executive coaching session. Participants will walk away with a slight shift in mindset toward greater awareness of their own use of inquiry to create value. Join us for this session that is sure to enlighten and inspire all.
